Wave defense boring end game

I recently played a multiplayer wave defense game with the new rules.
We had a great time at start, building up our factory while under attack.

The new rules give you points for attacking nests and worms. Without these points we would lose. However, by getting these points, eventually biters would be too far away to keep sending waves. From this point on, it got boring.

In the older version of wave defense, you would win if all nests nearby were destroyed. I do not like that option either.

I'm not sure how this could be balanced. Sending waves across huge distances don't work. Perhaps a very aggressive expansion by the aliens towards the player when it is impossible to send waves?

Eventually artillery would even defeat that. It would be nice if balancing was such, that the amount of production to keep aliens at bay, would match the production needed to launch a spaceship and possibly allow for another way to win or at least keep the game mode challenging.
