[MOD 0.12.29] BurnTheWood - Turn wood into coal

Post by enkindle »

Type: Mod
Name: BurnTheWood
Version: v1.0.1, (Factorio 0.12.29)
Release: 2016-03-25
Download: Post attachment below
License: The Unlicense (Public domain http://unlicense.org)
Author: enkindle

Description
Turn wood into coal. I know this would really be charcoal, but why complicate things?

New version (1.1.0) no longer uses furnaces as inserters will only insert items with a fuel value AS fuel and not an item to be processed.

What's the ratio or is this 1 wood to 1 coal? From real world values, it should be about 5:2, 2:1 or 3:2 kind of ratio. Wood 16MJ/kg, coal 24-35MJ/kg.

you could burn the wood directly without converting it to coal.
This mod seems a bit complicating unnecessary stuff.

There are recipes that specifically require coal, so it would help there.

Also I want to point out that it's funny but apt that the author of the mod calls himself enkindle.

I really made this mod because someone on IRC was had made a dense forest map and I realized how much useless wood he would have. I doubt I'll even use the mod myself, unless I start a forest map.

The ratio is 2 raw wood = 1 coal. Thats 1:1 fuel value, but it does cost a small amount of fuel in order to create the coal, so there is some loss, but not a lot.

It needs some work, my inputers won't put it into any of the furnaces on their own.

Ah, because raw wood is fuel, it can only be inserted AS fuel, not as an item to "smelt". I've made this into a non-smelting recipe. You can now do it by hand or with an assembler. It makes less sense, but it actually works.

an alternative is to have a middle step where you "chop up" the wood into smaller pieces that cannot be used as fuel

True, but I really doubt enough people will actually use this to make it matter.

I find it VERY useful :) I have 2 other mods that combined, all 3, makes me able to generate infinite petrolium!

It's fucking expensive energywise though

Maybe it should be a chemical plant recipe. The first time you really need coal for something other than burning is plastics or explosives both of which are chemical plant recipes.

Hello,

Thank you for cool mod! I very ecology-lover engineer, so I don't like when I should waste wood... Now I can turn it to coal and make some chemistry!

But I believe there should be some % of lost in this transformation. Say, 3 woods turn into 1 coal? Otherwise, it turn 8 MJ into 8MJ - 100% efficiency make me feel uncomfortable :D

It actually turns 8 MJ + Energy into 8MJ, the electrical energy used in the assembler is lost.
