If I start loading the game from Steam and then Alt-Tab back to Chrome and start playing a YouTube video, the Facotrio loader will stall on "Checking Sprites" and become unresponsive. The has happened repeatedly over the last week since upgrading to the new version.

When was the last time you restarted your computer? It's showing that the page file (65 gigabytes) is almost completely full; with your 16 GB of RAM it should be almost completely empty.
