Locomotive that can drive backwards

I've search the mod portal to no avail and I'm wondering if anyone has ever made modded up a single locomotive that can drive both ways (ie replacement for doing double header). If it hasn't been done before is it even possible to do with mods? If there is any chance it is possible then I may have just found my first modding project.

You can make locomotives that drive the same speed forwards as backwards when driving manually.

When modifying the locomotive using mods it still has a front side, which distinguishes between forwards and backwards (positive or negative speed). Automatic trains only go forwards, so having only one locomotive in a train in automatic mode will only ever make it go in one direction (forwards), not both. Making a train that can automatically drive both ways reqires two locomotives.

In automatic mode the game only considers the power of locomotives pointing forwards, locomotives that face the other way won't add any traction to the train (and burn no fuel), the'll be considered ballast.

The game really does need to take backwards power into account.

Would it be possible to have two locomotives share the same sprite? I know the second loco would still slow the train but I think it would still be interesting.

I don't understand the question... why wouldn't this be possible?
