But but but... that's pretty close!
I once had some fun with nests set to high/big, didn't see any coal nearby, so went on a walk. Coal ready to be mined: 0. Coal right under biter's nests: approx. 1M units.
I even pondered a bit if it'll be possible to live on wood and make a dash to oil processing tech. But in the end, I chose a lazy way out and just restarted the game.

It's a challenge, you have to build trains with no access to copper at all.

...yep, one of those bigger challenges I guess...

Well, it depends. In that situation I would try to build a car and search around. If I find copper somewhere, I would use the car to built up some burner-miners and load the mined stuff into the car, bring it back to the factory and continue. At some point I have a train. And then I could continue as normal.

This is the situation, where I would like to have some sensor, perhaps especially for one kind of ore. It shows the direction of the next big patch.

And I would not search more than about 1000 tiles (5 radar Lenght), if then nothing, I won't continue, because that takes just too long.

Problem is: no copper, no car... ;)

So what you learn for the next game, if copper is low: built a car first! ;)

In my current game I started with abundant Iron and Copper, but hardly any Coal! I could see some coal, but it was across a very large lake. Thankfully, there were two points where the two sides of the lake were close enough for me to build an underground belt, but I had a very long drive to get to the other side and set up the mines!
