So I'm thinking of getting this game but i'm wondering if the player is just not needed after awhile?

Get it, the player is always needed.

this game is definitely worth buying but its also very time consuming

I think if you like this genre of games the answer is definitely yes.
There are lots of gameplay videos in Youtube to check out, if you find that sort of thing helpful (I know I do!)

Just be prepared to loose a lot of time to this game - it is highly addictive!

Probably no surprise, but I'm gonna give the same answer everyone gave. :p If you find this kind of genre fun then I highly suggest getting the game.
Also as sillyfly said, there is a ton of YouTube content on the game, so my suggestion is to check some of that out first. I watched probably 20 or so videos of a Factorio series before I decided to buy it.

Also I will give the same warning, this game is very addictive once you get into. :p

I've noticed that console jockeys/fps players don't seem to be interested, at least that's my general impression...I've been wrong before...once.

Anyone with OCD I think will love the game, but must be wary because it will consume all of your time. You will forget your job, your family, your friends, your personal hygiene, eating, drinking, possibly even breathing...
