How do you control the spacing between the cars?

I see cars which are stationary being released, when a next car arrives behind it. How do you detect an arriving car?

Thank you Koub for pointing the perfect time tag when I talk about it!

If I can add : the word "detect" that you use, I can't truely detect a car (without using additional inserter with specific item to tag a car/mod as inventory sensor), i got to set each stop so they release the car at the right time. To make the task easier, some pattern/distancing are repeating themselves , but for some section i got to test it with editor, stop the time in order to identify the right time lapse to set for the stop. I'm editing something gathering all I know/my findings, allaizn's advices about it and more...

I find cars on belts intriguing, as the calculus shifts from items/sec on a belt to in what interval a container arrives and how long does it need to be un/loaded.
