Setting inserter filters takes one click more than it should

TL;DR
Setting an item to be filtered by an inserter should enable filters on that inserter.
What?
To set filters on an inserter you just placed, you must click the inserter, click "Use filters", and then click a filter slot. Clicking a filter slot when "Use filters" is not checked does nothing, not even a negative sound effect. I think that clicking a filter slot should set "use filters" to true (either immediately or when an item is selected) and bring up the item selection menu. That way you click the inserter, click the slot, and pick the item.
Why?
To save a click, in a game about optimization.

I've really felt this on space platforms and Gleba.
