Re: Graphical Option: Turn Health Bars Off for Trees

Honestly, even if they did regenerate, I would want to hide them. I really just don't care to see the health of something I have no intention of repairing.

Moved the above into this thread, cause it was really easy to find.

I point also again to this: https://forums.factorio.com/forum/vie ... =20#p55280

So the health of the trees might get into a good indicator for too much pollution.
Cool suggestion: Eatable MOUSE-pointers.

Rahjital wrote:But it's also potentially complicated for the developers. Handling potentially thousands of damaged trees slowly regenerating could get complicated (especially in multiplayer with desyncs - there are already enough problems with damage causing desyncs). It's the ideal solution, of course, but healthbar hiding is much quicker and won't break things.
They are already handling potentially thousands of damaged trees in multiplayer. Having them regenerate makes no difference at all from the programmers standpoint.

Not so sure about that.
Trees were said to be "passive entities".
It would make sense that they don't get evaluated on their own.

That should be no problem for the devs. Remember, the spawners and worms already heal themself, so the whole procedure would only have to be expanded for trees. ;)

So maybe this solution would be better:
Tree health bar visible only in the detailed view mode.

Well, even if the "healing trees" would be implemented, it would still be usefull to think about that. Showing the health bar only with active "alt mode" could be good with and without the self-curing trees.

Plantable trees and regenerating trees

Post by webkilla »

One more, that mean, his idea is new. :) joined into this thread. -- ssilk

Heyo

There's already a regen mechanic in the game - spawners and the player character... so why not let trees heal themselves?

I think its kinda ugly seeing red health bars under a lot of trees after I clear a path for a rail line going through a forest.

Also, it would be really neat if I could plant trees - simply for aethstic purposes.

Yup, totally.
At least the self-healing part. Doesn't need to be quick, just have them lose the ugly health bar eventually.

A more elaborate flora would be nice in the future though. It's kinda boring if it's limited to "is there a tree yes or no"

Updated frequently suggested ideas with this... there have been many threads on this; there is an obvious & easy-to-implement solution and lost of people are asking for it.

Prequisites: complete.
Game-value: Decoration if only regenrate or hide bars, new game element, if trees also degenerate with pollution etc.
Costs: Routines, which degenerate/regenerate health (per tick). Eventually more graphics for weak trees.
Opinions: Mixed, but open to both directions.
Cool suggestion: Eatable MOUSE-pointers.

I'm actually of the oposite mind.

HEALTH BARS ON ALL THE THINGS! And always on top. Though... Only when the extra information thing (alt) is toggled on.

I have a very special opinion on the topic:

A tree with health over 50% should heal itself back to full HP.
A tree with health below 50% should slowly die and get replaced by a dead tree thingy that gives less wood.
A dead tree hit by anything should slowly decay and vanish.

Or something like that. At least the HP bars should go. They are just ugly to look at.

But then again it is part of a much bigger topic for me because I would like to see a more dynamic biome system (including a dynamic growing/aging/dying/vanishing of trees but that's probably too calculation intensive so one can only dream about it) anyways... currently the biomes don't make much of a difference in my opinion. They are just areas with different default textures and there's nothing more to them. In my opinion different biomes should contain different resources more commonly than other biomes. Like for example coal/oil near a swamp or whatever. Sand (if it finally becomes a resource) obviously in deserts. Iron and Copper in rough hill/mountain like area, wood from the woods obviously and so on. That said every resource may be available in small spots in other biomes as well but only in small quanitites that encourages players to explore and watch out for other biomes which contain some resources more extensively.
