This has been on our to-do for a while now.

skord wrote:I'd like to totally +1 this feature request. I have a Factorio headless running in a Docker container which is linked to by another container which pulls environmental variables from the Factorio containers and automatically can create these DNS records.

In simpler terms, you start your first Factorio server and another process picks up that the server named "vanilla" has started. That other process automatically creates the A and SRV records for vanilla.factorio.example.com. If I want to spawn another server process on the same server called "bobmod", it will automatically create "bobmod.factorio.example.com". Then, the client only needs to know the DNS names, and not the port, effectively making it look as though the servers are running on separate machines.

This really comes in handy when you're playing multiple games with small groups of friends in that the servers that aren't being used are using minimal resources when people aren't connected, making it so you can run many Factorio server processes on the same box.
Quite interesting. I've on my list of todos "getting used with docker/container concepts". Could you please post more info about how you setup this? Scripts, config files etc. And not in Suggestions but in Tools subboard. TNX

+1 please add this feature! I'm planning on setting up a server hosting service and this would defiantly make it easier for my users to connect to their servers.

I haven't gotten to set up any SRV records in ages…probably literal years. It would be nice to have a reason to do so again.

What about now, is it implemented now? :)

Couldn't figure out how to subscribe to this without posting so here is a pretty useless post, sorry.

But also, +1 for this idea. I'd love to have it.

The "Subscribe topic" link is well hidden in the amber footer bar, below "Who is online".

Nope :(
(I even tested on another topic I'm not subscribed to)

Not to hijack the thread further, but it's there if you are logged in. Your screenshot appears as if you checked while not logged in, perhaps. (It says "No registered users" were browsing this forum at the time, but note how my own name appears in the list in my screenshot.)

I finally registered an account just to add my vote for this. I'm hosting a few different game servers for 3 different groups of friends so far, and I'd like to be able to tell them all to connect to friend1.myname.tld, friend2.myname.tld, etc. :)

I did not know the minecraft was capable of using SRV records. That's awesome, and actually gives me some reason to potentially use some more advanced DNS features.

+1 to this. Access to properly utilize the DNS system for servers would be awesome.

+1 for SRV record support in 0.17 or in 1.0. Minecraft uses this too and it's awesome to have servers from gamehostings on own domain without port outwardly. As an administrator I can change/migrate servers from one place to another and I don't have to notify all players that port was changed which is not user-friendly. :)

+1 for SRV, this would solve a lot of hurting things like always sharing your ip and port for a private server.

I wonder if it's still on the todo list?

Hopefully. I was real happy when running a MC server recently with my ability to add a SRV record to my domain and clients not needing to worry about ports anymore. Much cleaner implementation for my players. :)

+1 Very nice to have. We usually host two servers on the same IP. It would be nice to have "vanilla.domain.tld" and "modded.domain.tld" style addresses. Nobody like port numbers, because they are seemingly impossible to remember....

Also, thanks for a fantastic game!

This would be super nice to have, and hopefully still something they are considering

+1 still a much wanted feature, despite the server browser.

Especially when i want freinds to connect to by server, telling them to go search for it in the browser is abit meh. Easier to just hit them the domain and connect.
