Not really sure if this is a bug or if I'm just THAT lucky but I got a rather... lonely spawn location as I booted a game on all normal settings.

This is not a bug, just some random thing that happens every-once in a while that they are not going to look at as it is pretty much a non-issue as you can generate a new map.

Not sure if this is worth tracking down to fix, but I found a map seed that starts you on a tiny island that you cannot get off of.

"Escape" -> "Restart", until you find map layout that you like.
I usually restart 6-10 times until I have Iron, Coal and water nearby so I don't need to run between them in early game.

You know I must have started a hundred games (didn't play them all, was just looking for decent spawn) and only once has it ever dropped me on an island xD good times
