I don't exactly think it's a requirement, but I do think it should be more of an alternative, something that once invested will make your life a lot easier. For example, you COULD just use normal turrets and not have to depend on energy, but using laser turrets is so much more convenient than managing ammo. So when I think of uranium, I'm thinking that if you decided to take the time and energy out that it should really benefit your factory in a much more positive way than just more energy. Maybe instating some new modules that would heavily increase stats crafted using uranium would do it. I just feel like its needs a buff because right now in the way it is doesn't make me want to invest enough

That's actually a good idea. It's not required for anything, but if you are planning to play on after launch a rocket, then the portable reactors are something you definitely want.
