The same happened to me right now.

Same here.

Tried with and without mods.
Tried manually picking up coal and putting it in a box.

Error happens every time as soon as the coal gathering step completes.

Same here.

The error pops up once the combinator robot stops somewhere in the open.

One observation: the text for the next objective talks about a combinator chest, which does not seem to be present on the map.

This is supposed to be fixed by update 0.17.10: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=67424

This specific bug looks to be fixed in 0.17.10 indeed. Both in changelog, and by my quick testing.

The game crashes soon after (after putting needed items in a Compilatron's chest) in a bit different way, but I need to reproduce it. I do have log for it, and will open separate bug for this.
