You could setup a simple web login with a form to change your ip or something.

It's possible but a semi pain in the ass.

I'd be cool with a whitelisted server...

Rule suggestion: Something along the lines of...Users with unacceptably slow connections, slow computers or causing desyncs should do other players the courtesy of not connecting.

I've been trying to figure out a way to determine the ping of a connecting player in real-time. I want to create a way to reroute a connecting player to a more appropriate server. Basicly if your ping to a different server is lower than the server you're trying to connect to your redirected to that server through ip tunneling.

Anyways yeah I can add that rule.

It'd be nice if MP had max latency requirements, or timeouts for slower connections,

Would be very nice.

How about making the auto reboot be at like 3am-4am eastern instead of midnight? :)

Changed the latency from 100 to 150. Eventually I'll code something to kick/ban anyone with a high ping. Please check your ping before you connect to the server.

Seconded. That way at 3-4am I can be reminded I've been on too long.

Oh wow, 100 is how low I set it when playing with a friend of mine that has a good connection to me. The default of 200 is usually good for random strangers, although lower is always better if you have solid connections.

We'll see how 150 does with some of our more laggy players. :)

Need to post a quick vent. Sorry it if offends anyone.

I spent *HOURS* this evening, building the basics for blue science, gathering resources, fixing problems...to practically handcraft a certain amount of blue science packs to cover certain research items to get us past a milestone (bots).

Unfortunately, someone (I won't name names) logged on, didn't ask/check, and started researching that we didn't have enough blue science to complete... used a whole bunch of blue science, then changed it again.

I totally appreciate that it's a public server, but it's also shared, and we're decent people - all we ask is to discuss with those online the changes, and understand the implications before you do something. This particular server has hardcrafting and marathon/bobathon... so everything is on a knife's edge, and can easily fall apart.

/vent

I really think Factorio currently lacks some features to be public server friendly. I find it normal as multiplayer does still not offer an as bugless experience as single player, and desync bugs are found and corrected by the devs every other day.
As long as you have no way to control your server's population (grant/revoke privileges, with a fine privilege granulometry, whitelist/blacklist, ...), and what it can do depending on conditions (time played, number of actions done, ...), you'll be the victim of greavers, or even people who don't know and make mistakes. It must be very unfortunate and frustrating I guess.

And currently we're wasting resources on lab efficiency. That just increases speed (like a speed module). It doesn't give you free research (like a productivity module). Better to just make another lab, than waste the resources on the tech, especially if it means aborting a partially researched item that used up a lot of blue science packs.

Sorry about that tetryon. :(

Quite true - every day we come up with wishlists of features that we wish MP had, and then sigh wistfully as we await 0.13. The server admin is fantastic, and would love to provide us with the abilities to protect the server, but his hands are tied. Commands for example, are either available to all, or available to none, including the admin. The only way to kick a player is to IP ban them or restart the server.

For research though... a voting system perhaps, or some sort of lock-in. Some players like to wander off and start their own base, which is fine, but the research is still shared.

Of course, extra controls can't prevent everything. Everyone has different experience levels and playing styles and we have to learn to get along with each other. The larger the base is, the easier that becomes as you're not tripping over each other, fighting for resources.

If you're playing MP, check your pings to the server from time to time, especially if the server seems laggy.

Ideally you should be under 100 ms. If you are dropping packets, or playing from a very physically distant country, then chances are that that server is not for you. Not only will you make it unbearable for others, but it'll also be slow for you.

Someone has been on this server the past couple days and has not realized that they are causing lag for everyone.

Hmm the mods.zip link just loads the web site. What mod(s) changed? I can manually add them so I can connect to server.
