[2.0.73] Inserter gives itself a signal

When an inserter is wired to anything at all (signal or no signal coming from it) and has both read hand and set filter options chosen, the inserter sends itself a signal when it picks up any item.
The setup needed:

Every swing the inserter gives itself a signal without any signals actually incoming (the constant combinator is there just so there's a wire attached to the inserter)

Is the inserter meant to send itself a signal? So the signal on that wire is basically bounced back to the inserter on the same wire without any logic or anything?

In general circuit connection will see all incoming signals from a circuit network even if they are being sent by the entity itself. So far the only exceptions are asteroid collector with set filters and assemblers with set recipe, but they were intentionally made to subtract their own output signals from previous tick and it confuses quite a lot of players. Inserters are not part of those exceptions and behavior you are describing is correct as it is the default behavior.

Okay thank you for the explanation. I was expecting the same behavior as the assemblers so I thought it was an oversight with the inserters. Appreciate you taking the time to explain it!

Adding inserters to the list of self-ignoring entities could be a minor feature for the new stack inserters so you can track what's in their hand while still controlling their filters
