[2.0.73] Crash while Paused

I had saved and paused my game. I left it on the paused menu for several hours while I went about my day away from the computer. When I came back, it had crashed.

I'm on Linux under Wayland, and I suspect this will just be a "me" problem, but I thought I'd share it.

I doubt it's related to my save since the game wasn't running the simulation, just the pause menu. I'll set aside the save file in case you need it though.

Your CPU belongs to the Raptor Lake family, which has known issues that can lead to permanent hardware degradation under certain conditions. If you're experiencing frequent crashes, especially during gaming or high-load scenarios, your CPU may already be damaged. This is not an isolated case, it's a widely reported and acknowledged problem.

More technical details and analysis can be found here:

If your CPU is still under warranty, initiate an RMA process with Intel or your hardware vendor. Report the issue as repeated instability and crashing during games or other intensive workloads. Do not delay, as continued use might worsen the condition.

If an RMA isn't possible, the next step is to update your motherboard BIOS to the latest version, as several vendors have released firmware patches intended to mitigate this issue. While this won't fix already-present damage, it may help reduce instability going forward.

Other than that, there is nothing else you can do, permanent hardware damage cannot be fixed by the game or other software.

Ooof. That's a sobering answer. I'm sure I'm out of warranty at this point. I'm pretty sure my MB has an update that I didn't rush into getting put in. Thanks for the reminder about the chip.

You’re welcome. Greetings from a fellow Linux user. Myself, I use AMD 5950X chip, on Fedora system, and never had any problems with it, computer runs 24/7, often with Factorio in the background.

Sorry to hear your CPU is likely out of warranty. It was disappointing that Intel did not implement a global recall, leaving many users to absorb the cost themselves.

I hope your next processor proves solid and dependable for the long term.

The 13900KS has the warranty extended to 5 years, that is longer than it is on the market so it should be no problem getting it replaced.
