Modifying stock art assets

Hey, I've been working on a a mod that adds some new train carts to the game and I am pretty much ready for an initial alpha release but I am no artist and I am now dealing with assets. What is the stance on modifying stock assets to be used in a mod? I've just basically created some new icons and sprites by slightly modifying ones in the base game. Is this OK? If not I can release by just referencing the stock icons and ask the community for some help with assets. My long term plan is to find someone who can model and/or texture to help me out but I was hoping to have some way to differentiate the new carriages from the old one in my first release. Thoughts?

This is what the new icons look like if that helps:

I've also coloured the wagon sprites slightly, you can see that here:

That's what pretty much everyone's done :D Unfortunately there are relatively few (if any?) artists actually contributing free mod-use artwork, and most of the modders don't have much experience with artwork either so...I've never heard the devs say anything discouraging it either :)

Sweet, I wont stress too much about it then. I can model but I can't texture to save my life. I may see if I can do something basic because the robots look a little funny just appearing out of nowhere. I could try to spawn the roboport hatch sprite on top of the train and use that, may look a little funny though. Thanks for the reply, this is the second time you have helped me, it is much appreciated.
