Shields on Non-Grid-Capable Entities?

Is it possible to give shields to entities without using an equipment grid? Such as a new laser turret that has recharging shields on top of its' base HP. I've tried setting the "shield" and "max_shield" properties on various buildings to no avail.
Or are players and vehicles the only entities that can have shields, currently?

No, the backing C++ class doesn't have the concept of a shield outside the equipment grid on the entities that support it.

Without knowing how shields are implemented behind the scenes, I don't know how hard that would be to change for 0.15. Is this something worth discussing in the "Ideas and Suggestions" forum, or totally out of the realm of possibility?
