10 Chunk Blueprints

This is a project I've started doing, today.

The idea is to build the factory based on large units that are 4 map chunks wide (128 tiles) and 2.5 chunks tall (80 tiles). 4 times 2.5 equals 10, hence "10 Chunks", or 10CH. This way, it can be "tiled". If you have 12 times 10 chunks, that's 3 times 4 10-Chunk unit you can plonk down, all neat and perfect.

Each 10-Chunk itself is only 112 by 64 tiles of useable space (a little over 7000 tiles, or around 7 "real" map chunks).

Surrounding that is a Brick paving 3 tiles wide, for running or driving, and surrounding this again is a 5 tiles wide "open space" to be used for Belts and Pipes and other logistics, so that between each 10-Chunk there is an "open space" 10 tiles wide.

There are a few extra Brick Pavings at the edges to help align them correctly. UnderGround Belts and UnderGround Pipes should be used to move stuff across the Brick paving, so that it is possible to run or drive unimpeded across the paving.

Everything is made with items as low tier as possible, e.g. Small Electric Poles, so that they can be used as early in the game as possible. Often you only require Production 1 and Logistics 1 and nothing more, although some of the larger designs are hugely ambitious in scale. Some designs require Filter Inserters or Assembly Machine 2 but only because those are strictly necessary.



Another element of this 10CH concept is expandability.

Some 10CH units are just filled out upon presentation, because it makes no sense to present skeleton ones. But others are indeed skeletons, with all the infrastructure in place, expecting the player to gradually fill in "the meat", machines, as needed.

Others again are more skeletal than skeletons, in that they don't serve a specific function, but simply provide a versatile logistical framework for whatever the player wants.



I'm not sure where to categorize this. I notice there's no sub-forum for Blueprints. My first post will be about a Boiler/Steam setup, but I really don't want this thread moved to the Power sub-forum, because subsequent posts will deal with different things, not pertaining to power production.

And here is my first 10-Chunk.

It's a skeleton for Steam power production.

It has one in-take for 6 Transport Belts of fuel (Coal will suffice - probably not Wood), and another in-take of 6 UnderGround Pipes for Water. It all then gets routed to 3 lines each of 40 Boilers and 80 Steam Engines. However, in order to make this BP a lot cheaper, only a few Boilers, Steam Engines and Burner Inserters are pre-placed. I have placed all the Pipes and Small Electric Pones, and all the Transport Belt, but you need to fill it in yourself, as your factory expands, with Boilers, Steam Engines and Burner Inserters.

Each double-line of 40 Boilers and 80 Steam Engines can output 72 MW, so when it is filled out this beast should be able to produce 216 MW of electrical power.

There's a bit of wasted space in the middle, but that's inevitable. I like the neatness of the 10-Chunk concept, and I don't like ultra-compact factories anyway, because they end up feeling cramped.

Very nice! I can see why using single-map-chunks makes sense for Rail.



However, one of the ideas behind the 10-Chunk system is that you have simplified input/output.

For instance, a 10-Chunk Smelting setup would have four inputs: Iron Ore, Copper Ore, Stone, and Fuel, and four outputs: Iron Plates, Copper Plates, Steel Plates and Bricks.

Likewise, one could have a 10-Chunk Rail UnLoading setup, with input for Fuel, and outputs for Iron Ore, Copper Ore, Stone and Coal.

Here is a 10-Chunk Multi-Smelter

It takes in 2x4 Belts of Iron Ore, 2 Belts of Copper Ore, 2 Belts of Stone, and 3 Belts of Fuel.

The Iron Ore Belts are the ones in groups of 4 UnderGround Belts. The Fuel Belts are the 3 spaced ones (I imagine Coal will be sufficient fuel, if you fill all 3 lanes, or maybe even just a mix of Coal/Wood).

The 2 Copper Ore Belts are at the top and the 2 Stone Belts are a bit under the middle of the left side.

All input is on the left side, all output is on the right side. The Small Electric Poles should connect everything, with a bit of redundancy.

Each Smelter setup has 2x10 Stone Furnaces, except for the Brick Smelter which only has 2x6, because it seems to me that I never utilize much more than that many anyway (once I upgrade to Steel Furnaces). That's also why you want to be careful to not swap around the Copper Ore and Stone inputs. That'll leave you short of Copper Plates.

A later manual upgrade could (should!) replace the Stone Furnaces with Steel Furnaces, and optionally the output Electric Inserters with Fast Inserters.

In total
There are 6x 2x10 Furnaces that produce Iron Plate for immediate output, 2x 2x10 more that produce Iron Plates which then go directly (do not pass Start, do not collect $200) to 2x 2x10 Furnaces to produce Steel Plate, which are then outputted, 2x 2x10 Furnaces that produce Copper Plate, and 2x 2x6 Furnaces that produce Bricks.

The method of using Splitters to lane-combine Ore/Coal is one I think originally came from the YouTuber JGames. At least, as I recall, that's where I first saw it. I don't think there's anything else innovative in this BP, whether original from me, or something I got from someone else. It's plain ol' engineering.

Here is another one, a base-in-a-box, something you can almost plonk down right when the game starts.

It has inputs for Water, Fuel, Iron Ore, Copper Ore and Stone.

It has the skeleton for a single Steam Power line (max 36 MW) but with only 3/20 of that utilized. You'll have to expand it with another 17 Boilers and 34 Steam Engines.

It has Iron smelting and Copper smelting, some of which are routed to machines that produce Gear Wheels and Electronic Circuits. These Gears and Circuits are partly routed out of the factory in output lanes, but also sent to a loop, along with Iron Plates and Copper Plates, and from this loop Red Magic Science Potions, Transport Belts and Electric Inserters are made. The Belts and Inserters are put onto another loop, from which Green Magic Science Potions are made. The Potions are then all put onto a third loop, from which Labs take them to produce scientific advancement.

The smelters setups, and the machines, are all under-machined. That is, some Furnaces and some Machines are missing. This is to reduce materials cost and power consumption. You're meant to scale it up as you progresss through the early game. Eventually the setup should be able to produce 1 Red Potion and 1 Green Potion per nominal second, although since grey/T1 Machines are used, it's actually 0.5 of each per second (0.75 if you step up to blue/T2 Machines).

There's also a Steel smelter (again, it lacks some Furnaces - add them later), and an Iron and a Copper smelter that outputs its Plates out of the 10-Chunk.

Finally, there's a setup for producing normal Ammo (the yellow stuff) and putting it onto a Belt, while putting Coal onto the opposite side of the Belt. That gives you a Belt that you can extent, split and curve around whatever you want to protect, using Gun Turrets that take Ammo from the Belt using Burner Inserters. Super convenient.

Buffer chests are used for the Ammo, Gear Wheels and Electronic Circuits, and these are limited to 1 stack each. These Chests, along with the electrical wiring, are present even in places where the Machines have been removed, to make it as easy as possible: You just have to add more Machines (or Labs or Furnaces, or Boilers and Steam Engines) and Inserters, the Belts and Small Electric Poles (and Pipes) are already in place.

There are also "taker" Chests for Bricks, Iron Plates, Copper Plates and Steel Plates. These are all limited to one or a few stacks so that you don't risk overproducing (which causes more pollution than you want) in the early game.

There's a bit of free space towards the bottom right, but I honestly can't think of a good use for it. I suppose you could put 4 Radars there, if you wanted to, but be warned, that's 1.2 MW being eaten up right there.

Be warned, this is a very, very starting base-in-a-box. It has 3 Furnace setups on Iron and 2 on Copper and 1 on Steel, which isn't enough for a mid game base at all. Likewise 1 Furnace setup on Stone might be too little, depending on how much you like Walls and/or Brick paving. And 4 Machines producing Electronic Circuits... That's small fry. But it should help you a lot early game, climbing the Tech tree.

Be warned, though:
Around 1900 Belts, 321 Electric Inserters, 154 UnderGround Belts, and so forth.

It also needs 2 Tier 2 Assembly Machines, to produce the Electric Inserters, but if you don't have that Tech yet then there is a Chest so that you can put hand-crafted Inserters in there, to kickstart green science.
