I noticed, that you can see the contents in the logistic network by hovering over a chest with the mouse, but if the network is very extensive, you can't scroll down to see all item icons.

You can press the L key to get a scrollable overview over all the items in your logistic network. In that dialog you can also use CTRL+F (or click on the magnifying lens button) to search for a particular item.

Or you can (shameless advertising) use a mod like Minimap autohide that hides the minimap on the top right whenever you hover over a logistics chest so more items are visible.
