I have done all the correct research and I have all of the parts and "ingredients" that I need but when I go to the assembling machine to build some engine units to use in trains the part is faded out to red and I cannot select it.
Help??

You can only make it in assembling machines 2 and 3.

Don't feel bad, that stumped me for a good 30 minutes. Wait till you get to oil, that's a whole new barrel of oil... er, umm... fish.

Yeah I a lot of stuff like that stumped me at the beginning. Hehe yes oil will make you tear your hair out.

One tip in advance, for making electric engines which you will need in the future, they require lubricant, but are still made in factories. That seems to confuse a lot of new people (confused me too for a long time).
Also in your crafting menu, if you hover an item, like the engine, it will tell you what it is made in.

I think everyone had that moment where they loaded up with engine ingredients but couldn't figure out what was going on. Unfortunately the game isn't terribly good at pointing this out.
Engines and anything with a liquid ingredient MUST be made in higher level assemblers. They can not be produced by hand. Honestly since engines are such a weird exception, they probably should take some kind of liquid to fit in with the theme the rest of the recipes follow. Maybe have them use crude oil or water or something.
