Hesitant to call this a "bug" but I can't really see it being intended behaviour either - just as long as you are aware of it.

If you start laying rails with a standard left click on the arrow over an existing rail, the limit on distance is as far as you can see. This was pretty neat back in 0.13 as rails are quite an expansive network to place, especially without bots, but now that we can place items via the map there is technically no limit to the length or distance they can be placed, even dark chunks are no barrier. Of course, the start point must always be near the player, but I used it to lay rails from my base to my distant outpost without moving.

It's not perfect of course, the moment you hit an obstacle such as a rock or tree, you would need to start over. Speaking of, every time you start you need to start near the player, you can't start at one outpost and path to another. To me these are just more reasons to limit the range, as it's kind of like "well you can do that but not really."

Limiting the placement distance to say 100 tiles seems reasonable.
