[0.17.56] Screen tearing appearing after updating [Mac OS]

In the past I started to experience FPS drops when running factorio with v-sync enabled. To remedy this, disabling v-sync fixed the problem with the only graphical differences being that belts would have a subtle strobe like effect when fully zoomed out.
I had only been away from factorio for just little over a week, but since installing the recent updates since then, running with v-sync disabled now produces severe screen tearing. At this moment it's far too severe/distracting to be able to play as is. I have tried going back to playing with v-sync enabled, but the FPS drop is still an issue when zoomed relatively near to max view.
You could say i'm stuck in a somewhat limbo of either playing lag free with severe screen tearing, or laggy with no tearing.
I've tried tweaking the in games graphical settings which doesn't have any effect to the problem either.
I presuming something has change under the hood from a recent update that has created this issue. I'm curious to know if anyone might have a workaround or change in the games configuration that could help remove/reduce this effect.
Many Thanks!
