Turns out there's a lot more wrong with my approach of course. Since 12 high isn't a multiple of 32 it wasn't going to work to begin with :/

I have played a couple more hours and changed my mind. The new cliff generation is way better than before, and it makes biter defence easier since there are now few small choke points. I feel cliff explosives will really only be necessary if you want to start mega-basing on Nauvis.

Can you check if the issues also occur for a version pre 2.0? Since version 2.0 + DLC I have quite bad performance on Linux with frequent drops <30 FPS where I would never hit below UPS (which limits the FPS) before the update. It's a game design choice to incentivize getting your butt out of Nauvis.
