Re: Let's see your clever builds

I did quick test and yes, biters have antipathy towards radars when they are really close. This pattern of belts and radars was placed in between two large nests, in range of both. Radars were destroyed immediately, belts were left intact. http://i.imgur.com/lYZlelk.png Pollution cloud make biters a...

Update:
Well. I don't know what happened, but all of a sudden it works.
Maybe revisiting game options resolved the issue, maybe unzipping the mod.

Re: Let's see your clever builds

Anything will get attacked if biters perceive it as 'standing in their way', even if it's a belt, railway track or powerpole. Radars have a bit of a special position, because they do seem to attract some more attention than other pollution-free entities. I think the wiki still states that radars wi...

Re: Smelting where you mine

Direct insertion rules. The ratio is roughly 0.98:1 (electric/steel furnace is a hair faster than the drill), and in-place smelting allows you to transfer 2x more metal over the single train. I used to have single blueprint to make mining+smelting outposts with direct insertion using electric furnac...

Re: Do the Radars make the aliens attack sooner?

By the way, biters avoid making new spawns in the area of radar coverage. The closest I've seen is the new nest at the very edge of the radar LOS square. Thus, if you want that spawn you just eradicated to never come back, drop an autonomous radar in it's place (maybe a single piece of wall will suf...

Re: Yet another "Steam engine backup" solution (simple&low t

One water tank stores 210 MJ of energy (that is equal to 42 capacitors, but take much less space) Sorry for my stupid question, but how have you found that out? My calculation ( https://forums.factorio.com/wiki/index.php?title=Liquids/Hot#Storing_hot_liquids_as_energy_storage ) is much less (2.5 MJ...

Re: The tank should be buffed

The tank is really shines when used in conjunction with slowdown capsules (and turret creeping, to shave off the tail and save time)
Seems like the only option of clearing ore fields from big nests in early mid game, when you don't have power armor yet.

Snipe the nest, retreat, repair, repeat.

Nice setup.
btw you only need 3 pumps per 15 engine line if your pipes are short

Underground pipe is counted as a single pipe no matter the real length

Re: Yet another "Steam engine backup" solution (simple&low t

PS: For correct tests if this is really 212 MJ I would say you need about 10 or more tanks to reduce internal calculation errors. :) Don't have that many spare capacitors. Also, the number sits well with me. 212/250=0.85 0.85 can be the efficiency of the steam engine, or the temperature difference ...

Re: Yet another "Steam engine backup" solution (simple&low t

Placed a hot water tank, small steam engine and 42 capacitors. It charged them to 100% before running dry. Actually, I double-tested that with 20MW engine from the pic above and got different results - 262MJ (53 capacitors). Did not expect that much energy from all the extra pipes. That's ~0.8 MJ pe...

Re: Yet another "Steam engine backup" solution (simple&low t

More on storing heated water: You need 14 boilers to heat the water that goes to the tank to 100 degrees. One water tank stores 210 MJ of energy (that is equal to 42 capacitors, but take much less space) Normal pipe can supply 10 steam engines with water (edit: it depends on the pipe length, as expl...

Re: Belt buffers

There are two kinds of buffers: 1) small, squished somewhere in the cramped space to balance the load on the belt. When the belt is clogged, buffer collects excess items, when the belt freed up, it unloads them back. I saw designs like this: http://i.imgur.com/XDp7I5G.png http://i.imgur.com/oxuuSEi....

In my latest game though, I'm doing away with the circuit network and aim to simply replace those steel chests with compression chests :)
Hm, what compression chests?
