well, all i can say is.. play enough death worlds, and you will know the range just by looking.
Another thing to note is, the biters tend to go for defenses first. Placing little turretposts around your base may be more effective than walling it off so early on.

I think if you mouse over the turret, it tells you the range.

Well, the way it works is some biters gather up. A small amount. They go off and find a spot to look for. The spot is normally like 3 chunks away from biters and you. Ive got more power than you on my 30 hour playthrough, but its not enough due to a constant 100 plus big biters attacking me. (I mean... I get no pause in between attacks. My accums drain fast from lasers)
Think I got.like 2.2k solar and 1.6k accum.

I cant help you much but from what I know is, included with the scenario you can add a lua file. The lua file will handle the popup messages and more you are trying to do.
