Mods always need to be downloaded.
Server-side mods can be kind-of implemented using scenario maps, but these server-only mods would not show as mods anyway.

Just open the server browser and find a game with a few players in it ;). If the server browser is frustrating (it shows all versions, even if you can't join them), you could use the one I made . The problem with the custom skin is that the contrast is too low. Same on mods.factorio.com, the description on a mod page is hard to read. The default is not in Factorio style (thanks a lot for keeping it available btw) which is too bad, but it's so much easier to read.

Oh it seems like the sort by distance is indeed better idea than the sort by country, but I see you implemented both, which is nice! Thanks :) I had my doubts about how it might work for some reason but yes, sort by distance actually finds Finnish, Russian, Swedish and Norwegian servers for me firs...

It wouldn't be a complete replacement, only something that runs in the background to provide the website (upon loading the page) with ping times to all servers. Even if I would make a full client, which would be a lot of double work, I'm not sure it could launch Factorio and connect to a server dire...

I wanted to do that, but unfortunately this is only possible from a client, not from a website. Factorio does not communicate over HTTP, or even TCP (the underlaying layer of HTTP) so there is no way to communicate with Factorio game servers from your browser. Trains are fun till you get ran over Seconded. I was crossing tracks like two wagon's lengths ahead of a train (saw it coming, it drove slowly, I could easily make it)... then got killed by lag. Thinking about the suggestions... maybe I have an even better idea: sort by distance. It would obtain your location from your IP address and compute how far each server is away. How does that sound?

After this I reconnected to the same server without problems. Spawned right back where I was and was able to complete what I was doing. Played for another 2-3 hours, no crash.
