Re: Friday Facts #168 - Nightvision Nightmare

Nightvision is a feature I never use because I find it quite ugly, and I don't see any way of fixing that, expect making a nightvision, that moves brightness toward daytime without distorting colours at all, or making it into greyscale. If this is not acceptable, then I will not really lose out anyt...

Re: Friday Facts #160 - Playtesting

I am red/green color blind and I have always found the map difficult to use because of the color choices. Does the map show the spread of pollution? I've never been able to tell. Does it show where I can mine rocks? I see the creeper nests, I see oil patches, I see coal patches, I see iron patches,...

Re: Friday Facts #160 - Playtesting

Instead of merging damaged items directly, you could merge them visually so they occupy the same inventory slot, while they instead are represented as a priority queue of damaged items. Obviously the type of all items in a PQ are equal, so the object containing the PQ could contain all information a...

Re: Friday facts #151 - The plans for 0.14

There is absolutely nothing wrong with having a nuclear reactor explode in the game. The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant had multiple hydrogen/air explosions. While the explosions were not fission explosions, they were still explosions. I'd say include explosions if they benefit game play, or ...

Re: Friday facts #151 - The plans for 0.14

If the calculations are simple enough, then you could offload some of the work to the GPU, even integrated graphics has more execution units than the CPU. I see 12 squares with the same number in a 32x32 block. While I see 12 threads like this as unproblematic when done right even on a single core, ...

Re: Friday facts #151 - The plans for 0.14

I think a special container for radioactive waste should be needed to avoid the radiation to spread from the items inside to the surroundings. Make the nuclear reactor damage itself every n ticks. Research can decrease the amount it damages itself each time and maybe also increase the time between e...

Re: Friday Facts #137 - The release scarecrow

Are they going to remove the regular stack bonus between containers for regular inserters? I read the friday facts as if "inserter stack size bonus" was a new and separate belt-to-belt/belt-to-container bonus unrelated to the old stack bonus. Confused now :? EDIT; Well, the new stack bonus...

Re: Friday Facts #118 - The release scarecrow

Train station visualizations and rapid inserter looks nice. I have a couple of questions about the train station visualizations though: If you have a station 1000 straight rails in front of your current position without any signals in between, will you still see the wagon position of the unrealistic...

Re: Friday Facts #136 - Map Transfers

It was fun to read, I love technical details, however, I feel that firewall, NAT-stuff are non-issues: Unfortunately in Factorio nothing is ever easy :-). Using TCP would have three important consequences: It would force players to open TCP ports as well as UDP ports in firewalls and NAT servers, it...

Re: Friday Facts #121 - Path Finder Optimisation II

That's basically what they said they were doing with FF117, using simple, cheap avoidance logic for paths shorter than 50 tiles. A proper specialised pathfinder for short paths can do things that simple avoidance can't do, depending how it's implemented, e.g. add small impossible paths to negative ...

Re: Friday Facts #121 - Path Finder Optimisation II

I wonder if you could talk a bit about ideas for optimalizations you have rejected and why? I have a couple of ideas, but because I don't have in depth knowledge of your code, and you probably have thought of them already they might not be very useful, but I write them just in case. You said in FF11...

Infectum: I think you did well. If you want to relax more during your episodes you might want to set an alarm and just forget about time until the alarm goes off. Set it to 20 minutes and you won't have time to wrap things up, but there is always the option of leaving something unfinished for the ne...

Re: FishSandwich's Factorio playthroughs

I just watched your F-MOD/Dytech #34 where you start expanding to a coal patch. This series is still entertaining to watch :) If you build a wall along the blue line that I put on top of a screenshot I took of the video, then you can remove the inner wall you already got and you don't need to expand...

Re: The Hydra Dilemma - A Coop Factorio Playthrough!

I liked this episode. Except the overlapping substation I did like the solar layout. I think I will build it in my game soon, although without the extra substation. For this series it is excused and enjoyable. For the record I always build my solar layouts with substations after they have been resea...

Re: More trains vs. longer trains

It is possible to run long train with multiple locomotives to speed them up. If we say < and > are locomotives indicating direction and = is wagon I tend to do something like this <===< for trains not supposed to reverse and something like this: <>==<> for trains that I want to reverse. These can be...
