I had the same issue when setting a splitter filter. Took me a while to figure out why it wasn’t working (I had set it for copper cable, not copper wire).

Does it even make sense to allow the cables to be set as item filters?

TL;DR Add a button to the train UI to copy the train to a new blueprint. Why ? Creating copies of trains is annoying. Either manually recreate the train and copy the locomotive, or manually create a blueprint of the train. A dedicated button in the train UI would speed this process up significantly...

I instinctively pressed the arrow keys upon seeing the list of items. Arrow key interaction should either be fully implemented or not implemented

It would be nice if there was a way to either color the outside of pipes based on the liquid or drawing colored lines over pipes like the neon pipe post ssilk linked. It could be enabled by pressing alt or provided as one of the debug options. Would make piping much easier!
