Re: Bus design questions and considerations

As I think I mentioned I am quite new. I read and watched a lot of tutorial videos. In the end I ended up *mostly* following Nilaus "Base in Book" series (which seems to be very popular) with some tweaks and adjustments when someone else had a great idea. But the Base in Book series confus...

Re: Miners - saturated belt - furnaces - saturated belt

Some of your information is simply outdated: - For example, with the actual version of factorio, the corners should work without reducing the throughput of a belt. So no need to use a red corner in a yellow belt. - The usage of underground belts might no longer influence the compression - at least ...

Miners - saturated belt - furnaces - saturated belt

I easily watched a dozen videos on the topic. I got some nice ideas but there seems to be a lot of conflicting information about the correct ratios to achieve a fully saturated belt on the back end. What I *think* I got from all the videos for Electric Miners,YELLOW Belt, Stone Furnaces, Yellow Inse...

Re: Is the Steam version of Factorio behind?

Due to changes in terrain generation your map will look nicer if you DO make a new one instead of loading an old map though. Because the parts of your map that have already been generated obviously won't be updated to look like new maps do now. So if you're early enough in your playthrough that mig...

Re: Is the Steam version of Factorio behind?

0.16 is experimental, so you have to opt-in: Right click factorio -> properties -> betas -> select 0.16.x That makes all the sense in the world. I didn't realize there was an experimental branch. That leads to the questions: - Is it stable enough by now that it is OK for even a new player to use it...

Is the Steam version of Factorio behind?

I saw a post in the News forum indicating that Factorio 0.16 came out in mid-December. But when I bought Factorio from Steam (some days ago... mid-March) I got 0.15.40. Can somebody enlighten me as to why the Steam version is so far behind, whether I can upgrade to 0.16 manually somehow, and whether...

Re: Bus design questions and considerations

Eventually even that smelter will become overloaded, you can consider adding smaller auxiliary smelters further in your factory to replenish the bus. That one little bit is pure genius and I just had to say it. Terribly simple, obvious in hindsight, and most people (me included) would not think abo...

Bus design questions and considerations

I am a pretty new player. By now I know enough to recognize that the bus is core to a good base. But even though I've read a lot and watch many great videos I have several questions. The answers will of course be very useful to me, but I suspect this thread will become useful to many new players as ...

Re: Just bought the game; What were Your first impressions?

My first impressions: - Game is complex. It allows different players to learn and enjoy it in different ways. Good. - The in-game tutorials start well, but they derail fairly quickly, either overwhelming the player with too many messages or not giving enough information (New Hope 3 strikes me as bot...

Re: 100% Green evolution possible? Quickest path to it?

This game, in a small way, teaches us and makes us think about those issues. I agree. However, in the case of nuclear power, it does not do a good job, because nuclear power causes nearly no pollution in the game, only the mining and refining of uranium causes pollution. In reality, nuclear power p...

Re: 100% Green evolution possible? Quickest path to it?

Thanks. If I understood correctly: - "Going as green as possible" from the beginning, including replacing the initial steam power plant with panels as soon as feasible and adding green modules to electric miners and other heavy pollution producers will *mainly* be a "feel good about ...

Re: Beth path to learn the game

Would it make sense to take a 3-pronged approach while learning? Specifically, play 3 games in parallel: - A New Game with no biters, to experiment with layouts and create blueprints of things I like. I expect lots of trial, error, deconstruct and rebuild to happen here. That way I will not be wasti...

Re: Beth path to learn the game

Thanks for the hints on how to best New Hope 3, DaveMcW. But back to the main issue, at this stage of my learning (for example I have not yet leaned a thing about oil)... Should I be even trying further campaign missions or be doing something else, like playing a New Game, and then *later* come back...

Beth path to learn the game

Factorio is a complex and in part because of it very fun game. I get it, and it is exactly the kind of game I like. It also looks like even with the pure vanilla game you can choose to play a slow and steady approach or fast and twitchy fingers depending on what you like. Excellent, because I am mor...

100% Green evolution possible? Quickest path to it?

I am fairly new to Factorio and impressed by the many options. It is obvious that the early stages will be unavoidably dirty. But after a while it seems that it *should* be possible to "go green". Solar power and accumulators. Electric mining, smelting and constructing. So I am wondering: ...

Re: Power poles self-destruct on their own in .15?

I am glad I found this thread. I am just starting with the 2nd part of New Hope and the scenario made me wonder. Looking at how Factorio - by running out of local resources - pushes you to run train lines to resources at far locations, I assumed that power poles and rail tracks (that by themselves d...

Re: Disable aliens in Tutorial missions

Please don’t confuse my reply with “not wanting to deal with critters”, I totally plan to do it at least twice, and at least one time with the default settings. It is just the learning and experimenting that I want to take my time with. Turning off monsters is one way to do it. That way I can try di...
