Re: Friday Facts #262 - Hello my name is: Compilatron

Also can I just say, I *like* the idea of a little Robot Buddy. There are some things, like hand crafting, that actually make more sense if you have a robot working with you. Just as a counterbalance to the whole "oh no I hate it, please don't sully my Factorio experience" posts. In fact, ...

Re: Friday Facts #260 - New fluid system

Is the idea of a pipe containing more than it can contain, or less than zero, even for a tick, acceptable?

Re: Friday Facts #262 - Hello my name is: Compilatron

Also the really important bit of it isn't so much the "compilatron" bot itself but what that opens up for other units and mods.

Re: Friday Facts #262 - Hello my name is: Compilatron

I think this is nifty, and a really great solution to a bunch of tutorial mode problems. My main worry is that it will take away from the lonely castaway feeling of the game. And it's only a worry, a point of concern. I'm not saying that you shouldn't do it, just that you should consider this chang...

Re: Friday Facts #260 - New fluid system

Had a quick play and it looks as if the model works how I'd expect.

One nice "intuitive" thing is that it appears from my very quick testing that a double line of adjacent pipes works to improve throughput, without any strange artifacts.

Re: circuit network connector for hidden loader entity basegame missing

It seems to me that this is a small bit of a much bigger question that keeps being asked (I last saw it being put this way in a post by Deadlock on some other topic). Factorio is a "puzzle" game and the devs have stated quite often that they don't want to simply add things that will take a...

Re: Friday Facts #260 - New fluid system

I think "behaves like a belt with splitters" is the intuitive result people think they're going to get without knowing anything about it. I guess the question is, is that the right thing they should be expecting?

Re: Friday Facts #260 - New fluid system

The problems you're probably looking to solve as a game player are "why is this input not getting fluid when there's a pipe connected to it?" The problem of it getting *too much* fluid isn't really an issue, so the early player isn't actually going to care if a given 3 way junction actual...

Re: Friday Facts #260 - New fluid system

(Edit: replying to megannothing) Right but that's an analysable and solvable problem, isn't it? It's a complex result but derivable from simple rules. Like, for any given junction, if Flow(In)<Flow(Out), for N outputs Flow(Out)=Flow(In)/N The problems you're probably looking to solve as a game playe...

Re: Friday Facts #260 - New fluid system

Double post: the reason I'm asking this is that, as an end user, you probably *don't* know the fundamentals of the pipe system. Indeed, the current implementation seems to be so complicated that even people who do know how it works don't really know how it works. Also, the current system works in su...

Re: Friday Facts #260 - New fluid system

I'm not sure I fully understand your objection? I'm asking what people would anticipate as expected behaviour rather than suggesting a model. Under the current system each pipe section asks the one next to it what it needs, so what happens upstream doesn't matter anyway - each pipe only cares about ...

Re: Friday Facts #260 - New fluid system

What behaviour would you expect on a system like this? IN =======J=====J========J=======J=====OUT ¦¦ ¦¦ ¦¦ ¦¦ OUT OUT OUT OUT Would you expect the first output to get fully satisfied before letting fluid pass, or for it to evenly split 50% of whatever was passing through it? One like that should be...

Re: Friday Facts #260 - New fluid system

I have a question: what behaviour do you think users expect, and what makes sense to simulate? For eg, I would say that it makes sense that in a 2 or 3 way junction that the liquid gets split 2 or 3 ways evenly OUT ¦¦ i.e. IN === J ===OUT ¦¦ OUT You'd expect all the outs to get 33%. That is probabl...

Re: Friday Facts #260 - New fluid system

What is described here is the difference between an implicit (solve it all with a big equation system) and an explicit (small local updates) solution of the system. Implicit sounds good, because you get the whole solution at once, and its globally correct - but i believe its not the right decision ...

Re: Belt Stacking

One of the big changes that would make a difference, imo, is having assembly machines be able to use stacks/crates directly rather than going through an unboxing process. Same with barrels tbh.

Re: Friday Facts #260 - New fluid system

I think the problem with Pyroatheist's suggestion here isn't that the model itself isn't functional or elegant, but that it doesn't seem to fit in with the way Factorio, specifically, does its calculations. There's a requirement for each pipe to update, or at least for a pipe segment to update. And ...

Re: Friday Facts #260 - New fluid system

Bauer, that sounds like the sort of thing that would be easier to answer in a simulation than with the maths tbh. With TheYeast gone, I wonder if anyone else is able to work on his sim?
