I just (after a break) came back to my original SA playthru to collect a few more achievements (6 to go!), and it feels ridiculous flying over everything with Mech Armour, having a swarm of robots at my command, destroying worms with a single shot, and then getting beeped ...

Looks like I spoke too soon. It played for a few minutes and then crashed. Looks like the same crash in the render.
So maybe this is a macOS Sequoia or Mac hardware related crash?

I managed to take a break from Factorio for 6 months (I know!), and came back and wanted to load my Space Age Peaceful save from 8 months ago. Updated Factorio (via Steam) and adjusted mods to just the base SA mods, and load my save and it crashes.

Another thing to investigate: does your network have any sort of “Corporate Firewall”? Such as a Fortigate, Checkpoint, Sophie, Barracuda? It may be that it is trying to “inspect” the TLS traffic, and Factorio is legitimately failing the Verification step.
