Re: Friday Facts #102 - Getting close
If you really want to take Mojang as a model case for designing a successful indie game: Concentrate on a solid, technical basis for the game until its release. A performant, flexible and open technical basis will go a long way and avoid continous world breaking after patches and costly rewrites. Re...

Re: Storing energy as hydrogen (and oxygen)
Where does it break? It would roughly be the same with other names. The game doesn't care aubout water heat, for the game counts more or less how much energy ithe water has absorbed. We see that as Tempreature, but the information is more ore less only the stored energy. The only thing that would c...

Re: Storing energy as hydrogen (and oxygen)
The energy increase of the hydrogen via cooling is based on the fact that the volume never changes. If i cool water (down to 4^C not under!!! [this is important yes]) but where to hold the Volume all the time my "mass" of Water must increase. Same For Hydrogen, in which case the potential...

Re: Storing energy as hydrogen (and oxygen)
I love the idea of new energy concepts and heat integration (process engineer/verfahrenstechniker here), but I think the cooling of Hydrogen is rather "unelegant" (cant find better wording). Water energy content is calculated by Q = m*cp*dT. For hydrogen, its energy content would have to b...

Re: [Request] ELECTRIC BOILER
I think the request is both unreasonable and pretty "gamey". Why is it unreasonable? The only real appliance for such a concept is to provide base-line hot water in an already running process. So to provide for contingencies like biter attacks and player mistakes, you would still need to k...

Re: Diesel. Liquid fuel instead of solid fuel
Actually, the energy of water in Factorio is inspired by (as opposed to based on) real-world thermodynamics: Q = m * cp * dT. Q is heat, m is mass, cp is heat capacity, and dT is temperature difference. I think steam has an efficiency of 50%, so 50% of available heat gets converted into electricity....

Re: Diesel. Liquid fuel instead of solid fuel
[...] I sure hope the devs aim to make liquid handling at least an equal to solid handling. Both your suggestions aim at diversifying and distinguishing the current use of fuels without the game becoming too technical. Personally, I wish for unique uses for each resource, that has relevance at leas...

Re: Diesel. Liquid fuel instead of solid fuel
[...] - make wood even more useless - you'll need to introduce some jerrycan like item to fill the vehicle up from the player's inventory if you don't want to force the player to either bring along a entire oil setup+some barrels of crude to refuel mid biter raid - How would Wood (see what i did th...

Re: Wood and coal fuel should yield less power and top speed
This is documented there: https://forums.factorio.com/wiki/index.php?title=Fuel What he means, is that the fuel also influences the assembly time. Or how much power is generated by the burners entity (boiler, car, tank, loco etc.) This is most likely the only elegant solution. Currently, appliances...

Re: Diesel. Liquid fuel instead of solid fuel
I would take it even further. - Make Petroleum (or rather Natural) Gas and Coal / Solid fuels the only options to power boilers and furnaces. - Make Light Oil the only option to power vehicles. - Introduce Coal gasification to make coal obsolete as a primary energy carrier towards mid- and end-game....

Re: Time for NEI?
Qcor, I think you should have explained the functionality of "Not Enough Items", instead of leaving it to some youtube video. At its core, NEI is a quality of life tool used in Minecraft and modded Minecraft. It is a crafting recipe database, which is capable of displaying the recipe for e...
