Bots versus Belts
https://www.factorio.com/blog/post/fff-224 I realize this is exceedingly late in the day and could be labeled as rude necroposting, but I still think it needs to be said. Whatever would give a huge UPS boost on belts would do the trick in bringing players back into the belting fold. Everything in fa...

Re: Time Usage
Yeah, I was looking more at using substations and radar. And "underpowering" is not quite right, but rather zero power / turning off. For example, I could have a power switch that turns off radar on 1/4 of the map and I just turn it on when I want to look at it. Unfortunately, after turnin...

Re: Time Usage
I am a bit surprised at how much electricity consumes in terms of the game loop. it seems like the sort of thing you could check every 1-2 seconds per entity without any noticeable change in game play. Calculating consumption per entity should just be an issue of incrementing counters. Also, sadly, ...

Re: Killing nest are becoming annoying - Strategy to play?
As mentioned, you can speedrun to artillery without ever really expanding much. Once you've done that, it's like biters are turned off.

Re: Challenge: maximize research density
Question, has anyone done an SPM / time usage challenge? That is the winning strategy for a 100% speedrun. See https://www.speedrun.com/factorio#100 and change version to 0.18 (no one has done a 1.0 run yet). Sorry, should have been more clear. My head was in debug mode. I meant SPM / (60-UPS). It'...

Time Usage
I was wondering if there was a good breakdown of the time-usage stats anywhere. I see that entity update is quite high, assuming that's assemblers and such. But electric network surprised me a bit. Was wondering what caused that to be high.

Re: Challenge: maximize research density
Ah, because the artillery shoots into the black/unexplored areas with my current range, I assumed that wasn't the case. I guess there is some boundary though where they stop pushing into the black? For my gameplay though, artillery range is still very useful as it reduces the amount of guns I have t...

Re: Challenge: maximize research density
Artillery shell range! How can it get any more useful than that?

Re: Factorio and visual programming
I settled on cytoscape.js So far, very very awesome. Can't wait until I have realtime monitoring hooked up. Will post github soon. Idea is to incorporate as many ideas as possible from Factorio as it makes sense.

Re: Factorio and visual programming
I found this, but it’s unfortunately too entangled with nifi and specific use cases. I am looking for something more nimble, lightweight and extensible, ideally suited for arbitrary languages.

Yeah at some point you graduate from the discovery aspect and move onto the building on shoulders of giants phase. That’s a lot of fun too

Re: Planning vs Winging it
Ohoho, but one could argue that you didn't truly invent it, but rather that it was always there, you simply discovered it. I prefer to use words like create or discover over invent, as invent implies ownership. Yeah, I totally get you, but when I factorio I role play in my head that I'm the sole in...

Factorio and visual programming
Ok, please suspend your disbelief for a moment and please consider, especially if you're a serious programmer / datascience / ops person. I feel like this is the only crowd (factorio mod crowd) that may understand what I'm trying to achieve. I have been playing too much factorio lately and now would...

Re: Planning vs Winging it
I don't like the phrase problem solving, I prefer invention. You are inventing new factories and the delight and spark of joy with each new invention is what keeps you coming back. And winging is a lot of fun and definitely how you should play if you prefer not to plan. This is supposed to be fun. T...

Re: Roboport Spam
Here's a pic of my map on a new continent I'm playing around on after booting out the biteres (artillery on islands - all is fair in love and war!) https://imgur.com/a/VtN8TI2 Anyways, I think they should add more infini-research items. Seems like a trivial coding task and It makes the after/late ga...

Re: Roboport Spam
I think the massive speedup on Robots dovetails with increased range quite nicely. Sort of like the range on artillery. The problem right now is if you want to use robots for all building from map mode, and I'm not talking about logistic assembly btw. I am a rail and belt assembler, all the way, tho...
