Re: Parrallel processing in games & applications

Belts cascade update other belts in any connected sequence otherwise they would trip over each other as they try to move items That's why I suggested to divide by belt systems (interconnected sequences as you call them). Belts activate inserters, loaders, mining drills, and other belts that are wai...

Re: Parrallel processing in games & applications

First of all check how UltraSPARC T5 CPUs are made - they have 4x as many cores as ALUs. Why? Because in most applications memory latency is the main problem. This is a perfect example of how multi-threading helps to deal with memory latency issues which seem to be a main performance bottleneck in F...

Re: Factorio Friday Friday Facts #203 - Logistic buffer chest

* Main thread posts "network update" messages into a queue. * Separate thread regularly applies those to a separate network map. * Threads calcualte route proposals as asked. Simple. Accept that a route may become invalid during an update - just reschedule a reroute. ... Train networks do...

Re: Friday Facts #206 - Workflow optimisation

4) if your build process could use more than one core rather than the insanely expensive i9 you could have had a 14 core xeon for a similar amount of cash Half of the build time (or maybe even more now) is due to linking which is just single thread. Would splitting the executable to several dlls/so...

Re: Main Bus Design

I have a different approach to the main bus: I don't run fixed amount of belts - it makes no sense. I just use as much as I need at a given place leaving empty space for more belts. The "bus" also gets wider after every item producing section. If something needs a vast quantity of items I ...

Re: Friday Facts #205 - Teaching the things that everybody knows

How weapon works. I assumed space just fires at the nearest enemy while c is for manual targetting, while this is NOT true.

Tank machine gun

Is it by design that after pressing space it fires only at the cursor (if it is on a valid target) and does not auto-select targets? To me it seems like a bug but I don't want to flood the bug report forum if it is supposed to work this way.

Re: Five Ultimate Challenges, Kids

Anti-consumerism is a joke. That's how you normally play the game. If you don't go crazy producing soon to be obsolete things then you will never ever fill up 10 steel chests with useless items even if you put them in chests. You get a stupid pistol and maybe some armor that is useless. So that's 3...

Re: Ammunition Rebalancing

In ammunition/weapons rebalancing I would consider buffing uranium (explosive) cannon shells before even considering the cost. I like the tank cannon but uranium ammunition is just so much better than uranium shells at killing biters and for picking off nests from a distance there's little differenc...

Re: so who's done a Death World?

I'm like 22 hours into my 0.15 game which happens to be Death World. Firstly I prioritized getting laser turrets then nuclear power. Switching off the boilers really decreased the frequency of biter attack. Now I'm making production science packs and getting ready for high tech ones. I spent a lot o...

Re: Thank you (Make the dev-team happy today!)

Devs, this is one of a few games I have really liked in my life (the other one being StarCraft). It is the only game I have played 'seriously' since I got married. I play it instead of sim racing (which I do not consider gaming as I also race in real life) and I bought Oculus Rift for that... And 0....

Re: 0.15 Mega Feedback Thread

Pros: 1. Works without any problems. Apart from steam sync bug everything works fine for me. This is not that obvious for betas... 2. Death World and overall difficulty settings. There is finally a challenge without having to set resources to minimum. And the research on this mode is great - so expe...

Looking for players to do a speed run

Hi, I'm looking for some players to do a speed run. Basically everyone is welcome as long as he or she can play during agreed time (somewhere between 14-21 GMT on weekends is predicted time slot). Requirements: 1. Use of Teamspeak in English (does not have to be good English just enough to communica...

Re: [Windows] The death of Win32 and 32-bit itself.

32-bit and 64-bit are different types of processor architecture. 32-bit is more reliable, and 64-bit has more speed. Lately, though, engineers have been making breakthroughs in 64-bit arc's to make them much, MUCH more reliable, while keeping the speed intact. Sorry but this is simply not true. The...

Looking for players to form a team playing at 20-22 CET

Hello, I am looking for players that are willing to play as a team fairly regularly at around 20-22 CET (19-21 GMT). The rules are: 1. You must be able to communicate in English via the voice chat. It doesn't have to be a good English, it is enough that you can understand what others are saying and ...

Re: Friday Facts #162 - Theme Art Again

The problem with alien artifacts is that they are too easy to get. In the late game I'm not even picking them up... And it doesn't even make sense to need them to launch a rocket. It is a general problem with biters - they are weak and there is way too many of them. In the late game, once you get po...

Re: Looking for players to take part in a speed run.

I think 8 people is OK as long as eveyone is disciplined and has his/her well defined role. It helps especially at the start when hand-crafting and hand-mining is important. If we're not playing peaceful then you also need some people to fight aliens.
