You could unpack save file, and remove bluprints.dat from there. It will reduce size by 1/3.

It seems that new factorio patches did something... and now all recipes are changing with EVERY factorio update :( I could tolerate slowdown of my belts from 90 to 10... and some factories from 8 to 0.6... and some modules from 80% to 10%... But when other various filters,frames,catalysts get rates ...

Few ideas for underground trains:

New building: station elevator - when train stops on it, it move it to different surface. (limited train length).
Could be used with surfaces or caves mod.

Problem After each new factorio version, many mods stop working. Mod developers are not always able to update them within few month. Random people modify local files (sometimes just increasing the version). After few month official mod released. Now it is hard to find which local mods need to be up...

I was considering building similar mod.

Extra dimension to lay underground tracks. Special station (where train stops) that could put whole train to underground/or overground. This should be doable with current API.
