Agreed. I just replayed the 0.16 tutorial/demo to verify. It is almost as good as my fond memories and certainly much much better than the new attempt. The 0.17 tutorial/demo is a tedious and confusing grind. I've tried to play through it four times in order to find and report bugs but only succeede...

"Fuel" can be a countable or uncountable noun. Here it is uncountable. I would suggest:
Some structures require fuel which can be inserted directly by taking some in hand then clicking CONTROL + Left mouse button on the target structure.

what exactly should such a tutorial teach? Do you mean belting coal to the required places? There's a tutorial that pops up telling you what left/right raw/shift/control clicking does for inventory transfers. I'm not sure but it may only pop up if you haven't already used e.g. right click to insert...

It's easy to get into map mode e.g. by clicking on the black-x-on-red icon after the biters destroy something but there is no hint how to get out of map mode by pressing M.

After researching basic electronics the top-right alert to press T keeps flashing but the tutorial doesn't have any research that is needed then.

Most goals are ordered with the first goal at the bottom of the list.

However when it comes to the electric pole we are directed to connect before we have built the assembler that is to be connected.

And later we are told to evacuate the area before gathering "some" of our equipment.

Compy seems to be insisting that I stand on a transport belt and use the F key but it is not listed as a goal in the curiously upside down goal list.

At "Gather resources automatically" Compy repositions to left of iron ore deposit instead of to coal deposit.

And at "Stand on Transport Belt / Hold F Key to collect items" Compy repositions to Iron Ore belt instead of Iron Plate belt.

Compy never told me how to mine stone and the stone icon next to "Mine stone from the nearby deposit" shows mined stone not stone deposit.

Similarly the fuel hint showed mined coal and raw wood rather than coal deposit and trees.

Ditto iron ore, copper ore, etc.
