As a quick example, there are multiple mods that add new buildings, one of which adds new tiers of crafting machines (I believe it is one of Bob's), that is just like an assembly machine only a different color, like purple.

Many many mods have examples of this, done many different ways. I recommend picking one that does something similar to what you want and working from that. Basic concept is that you need to define the entity, and define an item (which goes in your inventory) that has a place_result of that entity, ...
