[Vaclav] [1.1.35] Artifacts on Belt Icons

Dear Factorio Team,

I really enjoy the visual improvements over the last few updates,
but noticed one set of icons (the belts), are not quite on par with the rest of the icons.

TL;DR

Update/Upgrade the yellow/red/blue belt icons to match the Art Style, Resolution and "Quality" of the the other Icons in the game :)

What ?

For example, as you can see here, the belt icons (in the toolbelt, on the belt itself, or on the assembler icon), are somewhat low-res,
and have artifacts in them. Compared to the Gear Icon (or Green Circuits), there are differences in the overall "quality" of the belt icon.

How would you like to change that

Match the visual representation of the belt icon with other icons. Meaning high-res pictures, maybe some reflections (as in the gears).
So the overall quality and art style is the same as the other icons :)

Why ?

The visual improvements of the game are a real game changer for me, and I really really like them a lot (playing the game since 0.12).
But to see a single Icon (belts), not quite on par with the rest of the icons, somewhat breaks the overall "look" of the factory.
For Example, the overview (the second image). Green Science, Inserters, Ammo, Gears, everything looks high-quality except the belt icons.

Kind of a disruption of the visual appearance of the game, if you know what I mean :)
Hope this should not add a lot of work to your team!

These are the icons as they exist in the icons folder:

The transport belt is the same resolution as the gear wheel, but perhaps a slightly different style.

Hi kirazy,

Thanks for uploading the original icons. This is useful for further conversations about this topic :)

It looks like they used the smaller variant of this icon (marked green), and up-scaled it to the "larger" variant.

• The Edges are somewhat blurry, and the icon itself is not as sharp as the other icons.
• Also you can notice the artifacts (little grey zig-zag lines, and rectangles) on the larger image.

So my suggestion would be, to match the larger icon, with the smaller icons.

• Make the Image less blurry
• Improve the edges of the icon
• Remove the artifacts (if they are due to compression loss, if the artifacts are intentional, then make them more prominent, so you can see the ridges and cracks of the conveyor belt)
• And maybe try to match the art style of the other icons in the game (but maybe keep the new design as close as possible to the existing)

I'm not quite sure, how exactly the new icon should look like, but I'm sure some Visual Artist of Factorio already has some ideas in mind, to improve the icon, but keep the original design ;)

Here is just an example (used from the Factorio Frontpage) of how the other icons look, and how oddly the conveyor belt looks (in comparison to the quality of the other icons).

It does look quite strange, now that you bring it forward.

+1: I never noticed it before, but this is one of those “never unsee” things.

I’m not sure. I need to look at it in the game. But if, then it’s a bug.


Edit some days later: After I looked very detailed into the game and compared the icon sizes, I mean this is either forgotten or just mixed up. In any case something like a bug. So I moved it from suggestions to bugs.

What about (in order of how much it's noticeable if you look for it) the assemblers, stone furnace, roboport, uranium fuel cells (+depleted), stone brick, concretes, barrels? They look grainy and dull, too, while everything else looks sharp and shiny. They might be intentional but just in case...

The gears on the assemblers look just flat, nothing like the gears icon. But that might be impossible due to the size.

Why did this need changing? The new icon is awful.

The old icon didn’t fit at all. The new icon is great!
