Question regarding science and research

I have a question about the science packs and their usage for techs. When I go to start a research, I see that it requires, for example, red and green science, I also see the timer for how long a single science pack will take to be used up for the tech, I also know that the x [insert number here] tells you how much of the science you need. However, I know knoww hat the number of the science icon is. Sometimes it says 2, sometimes it says 1, what does it mean?
