How Factorio calculates steam power?

Post by datarza »

I believe that in *Factorio* `Steam Engine` and `Steam Turbine` have the same priority, but can anyone explain how these values were achieved?

Equal utilization of each entities maximum power output.

so, it means `60 = (3 * 900 + 1 * 5800) * xxx`, right ?
then xxx = 3/425
therefore xxx * 5800 ~ 40(16/17) and xxx* 3 * 900 ~ 19.05... with rounding , it makes sense if it right

and "maximum power output" looks like real power output that depends on steam temperature, not maximum possible power producing by `Steam Engine` or `Steam Turbine`?

Looks so, I have changed the steam between `Engine` and `Turbine` and now the power production changed according to new maximum value of `Steam Turbine` which depends on temperature

The numbers on the bottom right of your picture are the average energy production of the given machines in the current interval (5 sec, 1 min, 10 min,...). The green bar at the top left you marked is the current energy demand and satisfaction, just the current game tick and no average. The other bars on the top are also all the current values, while all the other numbers associated with some machine are averages over the interval.

It is as Leowchen said, the game utilizes all available power generators at an equal level based as a % of total possible power output.

You have a power demand of 60 KW.

You have 2 sources of electricity to meet that demand; 3 steam engines and 1 steam turbine.

The total potential power available, if all 4 sources were to run at maximum power is 4.5 MW.

Each steam engine produces 900KW of electricity at full power for a total power output of 2.7MW.

I'm assuming the steam turbine is running on a boiler with 165C because each turbine will produce up to 5.82MW of power using 500C steam and your total power available is far less than that.

Anyway, 4.5MW of total power - the 2.7MW the steam engines can produce leaves 1.8MW of potential power from the steam turbine. (Same as two steam engines using 165C steam.)

The three steam engine's share of the total power is 60%. The steam turbine's share is 40%.

60KW * .6 = 36KW
60KW * .4 = 24KW

Thus the breakdown you see in under the producers. You have another 4.44MW of power available with those 4 generators.
