Discouraging splitters from disrupting lane balance

Post by golfmiketango »

Sometimes we wish to split a fully loaded belt or a belt with unknown contents, and wish to discourage the splitter from creating lane imbalances. I've discovered this seemingly superfluous construction can help:

It's certainly no panacea -- indeed it fails completely under the right circumstances, but since it works perfectly with perfectly compressed inputs, this can be useful if it's desired to avoid the lane-swapping, asymmetry, and other dubious implications of side-loading for lane-balance. I can't say I fully understand why it works.
