A friend sent me a link to the trailer, my first thought upon seeing the trailer : OMG! That looks amazing.

Second though, halfway through the demo, I'm going to buy this anyways why am I still playing the demo. I finished the demo and five minutes later had the full game installed and running.

First impression: That looks like a lot of work for nothing.
Few hours in: Whoa, it's easier than it looks. Why am I enjoying this?
Few days in: Whoa it's a lot more complicated than I thought. But I can't stop.

Second: huhhhh? this key mapping is strange... ;)

[when I look back to my first post, this was mainly about that. Now I made some changes for me. For example the double function of Q or the F key (I dislike that most) is mapped on the extra mouse keys.]

I always searched for a game, which simulates every single thing and let me create my own world. Watching, optimizing, planing, growing, changing.

I have a garden and sometimes watch the flowers. With factorio I can do that kind of watching also in winter. :)
To me, I first thought: FUCK, THIS IS IT:
Secondly I thought: FUCK, THIS IS REALLY IT.

And yeah, the keymap seemed strange at first, but its a different game approach than other survival games, with much more complex tasks, so the keymap fit very well on handling these tasks.

Pre-Purchase: Wow, I think I could get into that (watched Zisteau's videos).
Post-Purchase: Yep. This is my life now.
Later (10 hrs): Whoa trains and robots!!
Much Later (50 hrs): Whoa this thing has circuits!?
Even Later (100+ hrs): I still haven't gone to space...

What I've loved about Factorio is the layering of complexity but then the lack of requirement to going deeper. I can recommend this game to a whole range of people who will find enjoyment in different aspects of the core game, but then there is something deeper you can learn. I have engineer friends who double down on combinator logic to control their power network, and then friends who just love the RTS Alien vs Pollution aspect, and yet another group who focuses on layout optimizations and factory design. Abstractions are what make this work, they improve the automation later in the game an open the player up to explore other aspects and let them continue on making their own goals in game.

First miners to automate resource gathering,
Then assemblers to automate item construction,
Trains to automate item transportation.
Robots to automate building construction,
and then Circuits to automate the factory as a whole.

Now just waiting to automate the other aspects of the game (factory expansion, alien farming, etc.) I want Factorio to keep iterating until it is possible for it to play itself under your guiding hand (à la Conway's game of life).
