Crash On Startup (win7 with sp1)

Place for things which are bugs but we have no idea how to solve them. Things related to hardware, libraries, strange setups, etc.

Crash On Startup (win7 with sp1)

Post by nebukadnet »

This bug is extremely annoying. When I load Factorio the screen turns black and nothing happens for approximately 5 minutes. Then an error message appears and although I can't see or click on it, if I close it (through the bar at the bottom), I can close the game. When I try starting it again it always works, without fail. While the screen is black my computer doesn't react, including Control+Alt+Del, Alt+Tab, Alt+F4.

What graphics card do you have? It looks like it's failing to create the display which may be not enough VRAM (graphic card related).
If you want to get ahold of me I'm almost always on Discord.

I'm having similar trouble. Windows 7, Service Pack 1 installed. Downloaded the .exe, am now downloading the .zip to see if it will work any differently.

Factorio crashes after about 30% loaded, while it is 'Loading Sprites'. Comes up with an 'Unexpected Error' notification, tells me to go grab the log file and post to the forums but there is no log file because the game has never run even once. Checked the file location, searched it, not there. No Factorio-current.log.

I am however trying to play the game on a fairly old laptop. It apparently has a "Mobile Intel(R) 945 Express chipset family" for the graphics card. Rseding91 mentions that there may not be enough VRAM if its a graphics card issue. Is there any way to remedy this if it is the case?

This is seriously limited. You might want to give a try to these options in \AppData\Roaming\Factorio\config\config.ini :
low-graphics=true
graphics-quality=very-low
fullscreen=false

If this doesn't work (and there's high chance it won't) I have no other solution than updraging your hardware.

From what I have been able to gather the issue is related to AMD graphics cards. I can see in your log file you have such a card.
I am playing on a laptop, and my brother on a much heavier stationary computer, which is superior in all specs.
My brother is the only one experiencing graphics related crashes, and he have an AMD card, while my laptop have an intel card.

I hope this is of help.
