Space age requirements

Post by Balthazar »

noticed https://store.steampowered.com/app/6453 ... Space_Age/ and https://factorio.com/buy-space-age have different requirements listed, specifically factirio.com lists windows 10 and 11, but steam says 7 and 8 are also supported. Which is the correct one?

See at the very bottom of system requirements:

* Starting January 1st, 2024, the Steam Client will only support Windows 10 and later versions.

Which, by extent, means that assumed OS requirements for Win versions of Steam games became "Win10 and later" too.

Windows 7 and 8 are both EOL, so they won't be listed as supported even if it will technically work.

Base requirements seem to have gone up from dual core to quad core. Is that 100% required, or will it still run OK on dual core?
The PC my boys use is dual core 3.0ghz.
I have a RAM upgrade ordered for them, and it should arrive Tuesday. That's cheap and easy, not like replacing a processor.

Is it just me or were the system requirements not posted until some time in the last week or two? I only saw them this morning.

With all the optimizations, I would suspect 2.0 has lower system requirements.

But Space Exploration needs a LOT of resources and I expect some of that to rub off on Space Age.

So far, it's running fine on both computers as above. Only one of us has reached space, though.

The great thing is that if somebody only has a computer with Windows 7 for whatever reason, it's incredibly easy to just run Linux on that same computer (and have probably much better performance).

The downside is tech support for Linux is "Google this, find someone's forum thread, and copy paste 3 lines of cryptic text into sudo root command with no explanation to see if it fixes the problem."
There's no on ramp to actually figure things out. I've tried it twice.

Ubuntu's community (among others) provides an on-ramp.
Can confirm better performance on Ubuntu compared to Win 7... but in 0.16 and heavily modded (AngelBobs).

One specific change in 2.0 might severely increase minimum GPU requirements :

I'm playing on Windows 7, it works just fine. I plan to upgrade to Linux soon (9800x3d baby...don't suck pls!). Windows 10/11 can gargle my inserter.

I'd appreciate an example of the opposite from Windows side.
From the real man in charge, not from some Independent Advisor.

Properly trimmed Win10 is on par with stock Ubuntu 22.04 (on low end hardware, at least). It's a VERY painful process though...
Properly trimmed Ubuntu may or may not fare better, depends on your luck with GPU.
As of these "changes", I'm not seeing any difference due to ghosts YET. And I'm sitting with mobile Vega 8...

And you probably won't for some time, the players having issues have ~9 year older and ~20 times weaker GPUs than yours.
