I've got the same use of the forest next to my factory until spitters came and destroyed the forest. :cry:

wait, they can destroy the forest? Is it by shooting at a target in the forest? Good to know.. :p

You know biters biting on your stone walls? Well, this there-is-something-in-biters-way-so-biter-needs-to-destroy-it thing makes enemies also "attack" trees if they are in their way. Sometimes the biter or spitter calculates a new path before completely destroying the tree so there will be a "damaged" tree as result.

Maybe this changed recently but historically they would even attack each other.

This part was fixed - it lead to some hilarity in places when mods added lots of aoe attacking biters and there were whole locations full of dead biters.

Biters do seem to have a thing for forests - currently it seems that forest is the best protection for your base. No migration will occur into forest and any attacking force will be so lost and confused that will come in nice line instead of blob or get lost in the forest.
