Also, if you haven't already, take a look at the "Wave defense" scenario which is also in vanilla factorio.

I haven't really played wave defense yet, but this seems to be a different enough scenario to be worthy of being standalone ?

More seriously, "Marathon" is a preset to ramp up the difficulty to do research by making recipes more costly in inputs. This will mean more time, industry and pollution to get all the work done which means many times more evolution... Yeah, just to give an idea, Red+Green research is 8 times more expensive in Marathon : x4 because of the expensive science, x2 because of the expensive recipes.
