Sulfur from acid neutralization

Post by Jeriacor »

TL;DR Subject title says it all: I'd like acid neutralization to have sulfur as a product.

What: The recipe for acid neutralization, first learned on Vulcanus from the Calcite Processing research, should have some amount of sulfur as a product, in addition to the steam.

Why: It makes sense from a common sense and a gameplay standpoint.

A: Common sense. Pretty self-explanatory. When you neutralize sulfuric acid, where does the sulfur go? Also, Vulcanus has minable rocks on the surface with sulfur in them, and huge fountains of sulfuric acid. Solid sulfur should not be hard to get on this planet by some sort of automation.

A small counterpoint here would be that it would actually come out as calcium sulfate, but adding a new entity with related recipes seems like too much trouble.

B: Gameplay. It adds crafting convenience without significantly impacting the difficulty.

Solid sulfur is used to make chemical science packs, explosives, and sulfuric acid. We already have sulfuric acid, so that doesn't matter.

Vulcanus, with easily available iron, copper, and stone from lava, establishes itself as a prime location for crafting on a system-wide scale. Due to this it may be desirable for some players to move all crafting, including weaponry, ammo, and science packs, to Vulcanus from Nauvis.

Petroleum products are the most difficult to obtain on Vulcanus as you have to use coal liquefaction and crack down the heavy oil. Being able to focus your relatively limited petroleum into plastic would be very useful.

By the time you're even scaling up to this, or even just able to research and use cliff explosives, you've already conquered Vulcanus. You've already built up metallurgic science pack manufacturing and rockets to get them off-planet. You don't really need explosives for the Vulcanus leg of your journey at all. (Although demolishers are somewhat more vulnerable to explosive damage on their head, that alone will not be enough to kill one.)

Therefore, this wouldn't affect the difficulty of Vulcanus as a planet, but would be convenient for scaled-up crafting going forward, considering petroleum products are the scarcest resources on Vulcanus.

BTW: I am aware that Bob's/Angel's does this, but from the standpoint of asking devs to consider this, I would be concerned that they would generally write off Bob's/Angel's as overly complicating. This suggestion, in my opinion, stays at the level of simplicity of the base game.
