Please Bring Back Chests and Power Poles as Sources of Fuel

Please Bring Back Chests and Power Poles as Sources of Fuel
Wooden Chests and Wooden Power Poles get upgraded and become obsolete quickly. Leaving the player with only the option of destroying them seems unfair, lazy and unnecessary.
Please let the player decide how to dispose of these items, by returning their ability to act as fuel.

Re: Please Bring Back Chests and Power Poles as Sources of Fuel
Or get a recycling mod, that was my preferred route, since I could then recycle other things that became obsolete.
Re: Please Bring Back Chests and Power Poles as Sources of Fuel
I play vanilla. I personally feel that a game should be desirable to play sans mods.
Re: Please Bring Back Chests and Power Poles as Sources of Fuel
I can sort of understand not burning power poles considering that they can contain metal, but it's a big deal. Putting them into the furnaces was very convenient and I see no reason to get rid of it

Re: Please Bring Back Chests and Power Poles as Sources of Fuel
Autofill mods autofilling them into burners was quite annoying... but I guess that's a minor/irrelevant issue.
EDIT : having inserters insert them into burners, however, is a somewhat bigger issue !

Re: Please Bring Back Chests and Power Poles as Sources of Fuel
I never liked this feature, and am kinda glad is is gone. But, well, it both hurt and helped.
A lot of the time you build something then shift-click (or was it ctrl click?) on your inventory blank to fill it up. And if you ran out of coal, you just destroyed a chest or power pole. Kinda annoying.
But, on the other hand, having a way to use them later and not just leave them in chests, well, that made building them much easier to want to do. Like, how many people hate building burner mining drills, iron chests, or burner inserters. All three work fine, we just hate that after you get Mining drills, steel chests, and basic inserters, they are obsolete and get shoved in a chest somewhere. (And blown up)
Knowing I could recycle them made building them not something I worried about. Even though the resource cost was tiny, and building them actually helped you get MORE resources FASTER.
In any case, we really do need a recycling option. Or at least a trash can. Seriously, if productivity modules are the problem, why not just restrict it to things that forbid productivity modules. That would literally cover all the obsolete final products.

Not to mention that they allowed you to use copper as a power source !

Not 100% sure, but does that actually double the fuel value of the wood?
Because if so, that is kinda hilarious.

Re: Please Bring Back Chests and Power Poles as Sources of Fuel
Recycling has the cheese problem that you could use productivity modules to get free stuff and then recycle it. Yeah, normal people wouldn't really do that outside of tests, but you know that some idiots would abuse it
Restricting recycling to products that have no further use is a nice solution though

Please read the whole paragraph before point out productivity module problem. I specifically stated how to resolve it. Only allow recycling of finished products immune to Productivity.Ranakastrasz wrote: ↑Wed Feb 27, 2019 8:56 pm

I, too, would trade happily the ability to burn finished products containing wood for a way to recycle or destroy properly obsolete items (chest destruction being for me nothing more than a dirty workaround).

Yep. Are there even any intermediates that become useless and need to recycle?
I mean, its only the finished products, all of which are immune to productivity. Right?

Or plastic. Burn all the things !!1
does did !
That design actually has the power poles throughput tailored for the maximum consumption of that boiler. (Bob's, Mk2, before rebalance.)
I have a very similar design, with wood only, but it needs double the greenhouse amount !
(Of course, considering how cheap the greenhouses are, this is wasting copper, so a joke design.)
I *did* use that trick more seriously, on a map where I had no access to the starting coal...

Re: Please Bring Back Chests and Power Poles as Sources of Fuel
What even is the reasoning behind removing it?
Re: Please Bring Back Chests and Power Poles as Sources of Fuel
Maybe just because it would look strange in the new fuel types tooltip GUI that is shown when you hover a fuel slot?
Re: Please Bring Back Chests and Power Poles as Sources of Fuel
I agree. I loved to get rid of the wooden poles and chests by burning them.
However, I still got those burner miners and a half used pick-axe (R.I.P.) and outdated wearables that were doomed to sit in a chest until the end of days.
I'll have the half used pick axe less and a few stacks of wooden poles more. Consider it you personal OCD therapy.

Re: Please Bring Back Chests and Power Poles as Sources of Fuel
What people want is not a way to get energy from obsolete wooden stuff by burning it (I think). People want a way to dispose of obsolete stuff - whatever it is made of - without using the "put it in a chest and blow the chest up" trick.

Re: Please Bring Back Chests and Power Poles as Sources of Fuel
Well, now you cannot get rid of your extra armors by having biters hit you !
In my case, both - I especially found that this easter egg of being able to burn copper for energy was pretty cool !

If you don't want to blow up a chest, what about putting obsolete items in the trunk of a car and launching it into space? If you can launch yourself in a car, or even a fish, why not other stuff? You have a lot of trunk space that is essentially out of sight until you get a rocket ready.
