Cars are way to cheap

Post by Nana-Love »

I think the cars need to be harder to get. The resources to build them are extremely easy to get, being pipes, steel and gear weals. The research for cars are balanced well, but the actual building is to easy.
Anyone agree with me?

No.

Cars are cheap to build, but they're not really useful. Unless you make your factory in an actual grid pattern, with wide lanes to drive in, you're going to collide with stuff all the time when you drive around inside it, damaging nt only the car, but also all your other stuff, Poles, Pipes, etc, so that you have to stop and backpedal and repair it.

Driving around outside your factory isn't much better. You'll constantly collide with Trees. Even though you won't have to repair those, it'll gradually damage your car, and you risk ending up stuck out in the wilderness far from home car-less.

So no, relative to its utility, the car is fine. I'd like to see it given a boost though, which would then in turn justify an increased build cost.

Not that build cost matters. I'd still build myself a car even if it costs x4 times the mats it does now. And I'd still use it only very rarely (unless it gets a usefulness boost).

In general, build cost doesn't matter for things the player uses just one of at a time. Combat Shotgun, SMG, Power Armor MkII. We'll build it, no matter how expensive it is, because it is a power-up.

It only matters with player-consumed items, like ammo. The Modular Armor Revamp mod has the Portable Fusion Reactor burn special fuel, made by combining Alien Artififacts and Solid Fuel (that mod also offers several other lesser power options, though). So that's another cost that actually matters, because it's a consumable, not a build-once item (or build-a-few-times-item in coop MP where you lose your stuff when you die and respawn).

That's a good point. Didn't really think about it that way. Thanks for being respectful btw :)

Back in the day you could fire your shotgun while inside the car. They've been nerfed enough :)

Personal Laser Defense still works while in the car though, if you really want to do such a build.

I think the car is perfectly fine right now. It requires a lot of infrastructure to make (engines can only be made in an assembler), and that kind of requirement is much better than upping the cost or what have you. That being said, the same production chain is needed for logibots, so you'll end up doing it anyway unless you're 120% crazy and doing a NO BOTS run.

Also, engine units can't be crafted in your pocket. So unless you've also got some form of power with you, you can't create a new car if you don't have any engine units. And seeing as the car isn't very durable (a few biters/spitters, some trees and driving full speed into a rock) you'll need lots of repair packs or multiple cars to make a trip.

Once you set up an Assembler Machine to produce Engines, it's trivial to make it produce 32 of them instead of just 8, so that you can make one Car and have spares enough for 3 additional Cars. Granted, the Steel cost of that isn't quite trivial early game. It almost is, but not quite.
